I have used this product and it is INCREDIBLE! I will go into detai about how and why it heals but first I want to declare that my experience with migraine and migraine associated vertigo was first rate!!!

This BIO-MAT was made in Japan because I am learning that they won’t allow products that actually cure people to be produced in the United States.  I knew a guy a couple of years ago who was inventing things (he had his Ph.D. in physics from Berkley) to clean the environment, to make people healthy, you name it. But he told me the FBI kept arresting him and telling him to stop it. He said that if he did these things our country’s financial system would fall apart. It sounded kind of crazy, especially the really scarey stories he told me the country was doing to control population. But he would know because although NASA didn’t want him making his own stuff, they wanted his knowlege. Anyway, he got to know a lot about the secrets of our government. Bottom line, our government doesn’t really want us to be healthy. They just want us to take pills which really just make us sicker.

My only guess about why they are selling it in the us is pressure. It’s been on the market for over 15 years and is world-renowned. The technology has won a nobel prize. The makers of this mat have been received by the leaders of all of the major countries around the world I would call that pressure.  I am also finding it being used in many massage salons.

I was ecstatic when I experienced the healing qualities of the Bio-Mat which instantly put me into a soft sleep. This mat uses Infrared light and Negative Ion Technology with the healing power of Amethyst and Tourmaline to deliver energetic therapeutic results. The Bio-Mat is FDA approved and is capable of the following, all of which I experienced myself:the infrared light passed through amethyst releases over 20 million years of information which is made available to the human body for healing processes. !!! (see explanation below)

Improved circulation and cardiovascular function.

Improved Immune System Function.

Relief of Pain.

Burns Calories and Controls Weight.

Eases Joint Pain and Stiffness.

Reducess Stress and Fatigue.

Reduceses Stress and Fatigue.

Improves Skin.

Removes Bodily Toxins and Assists in Detoxification.

What makes the Bio-Mat unique is that is uses 6.8 microns of Medium Human Infrared. According to NASA research Human Infrared normalizes a variety of important physiological functions, especially glandular functions. This Human Infrared feature makes the Bio-Mat different than any other Infrared device on the market.

AND, the Bio-Mat comes with a DC converter which is compatible with the human body. (AC is NOT compatible with the human body – these people have thought of everything!)

Next, the Bio-Mat delivers Negative Ions, directly to the body through the skin’s surface via conduction. This greatly differs from ambient air ions delivered through the popular negative ion generators used for air cleaning, which NASA reported only positively effected 25% of people. The direct conduction of negative ions allows for an immediate response and change in the body’s electrical field for 100% of the people, whereby cell channels are activated for a rapid return to the body’s optimal physiological state.

The Bio-Mat is FURTHER enhanced with Amethyst Crystals, known for their calming and healing effects since ancient times. In addition, Amethyst crystals change in infrared light when refracted through infrared light and it is the ONLY substance which does so. In the end, the “Amethyst Effect” comes down to: the infrared light passed through amethyst releases over 20 million years of information which is made available to the human body for healing processes. !!!

Korean researches propose that addition of the amethyst allows for greater increase in the utilization of the light by the human organism. Ah-ha!

Far infrared rays (FIR) penetrate 6-8 inches into the human body. These rays not only benefit the skin and muscle tissue on the surface of the body, but penetrate into deeper tissues. The FIR penetrates into the lymph glands, blood vessels, nerves, as well as key organs. The rays optimize health of these tissues in a number of ways. First discovered by NASA, scientists propose that among the energy spectrum coming from the sun, that the FIR waves are by far the safest and most beneficial electromagnetic energy available for the human body, directly affecting all metabolic and cellular functions.

This is just the short of it. If you have any questions regarding more of the how, what and why please leave a comment or email or call me using information on my “Make an Appt.” page.

Available for Local Healing Sessions. However, if you’re at a distance, they are affordable, go to: www.julcal.biomat.com or any of the BIO-MAT links above.

Sending Many blessings to you,

Migraine Surgery offers a complete cure for some of the over 303,000,000 sufferers of migraine in the world. It is a simple, painless surgery with no recovery period and a 90% success rate. It requires a new look at the migraine process. Let’s first take a look at the mysterious disease of migraine.

The migraine process is not well-understood. For many decades, it was thought to be due to a constriction and dilation of the blood vessels in the brain. If a physician puts a tight rubber band around a patient’s head, stopping the blood flow to the scalp, the pain will quickly stop. For some reason, the thinking changed. It was decided that migraineurs begin with a hyper-excitable brain which has a threshold which is lower than normal brains. After reaching this threshold, the trigeminal nerve sends a signal causing a domino effect. One of those dominos is called a cortical spreading compression.  In other words, a wave spreads across the brain which is not in synch with normal brain waves. This causes distorted sensations of any type, depending on where it hits: optic (hallucinations and auras of all kinds, with or without pain); otic (dizziness with or without pain), gastric (pain in head and/or GI), time distortion, body distortions and any other weirdness imaginable throughout the body. Does this sound a little like Alice in Wonderland? Many have claimed that Lewis Carroll wrote this book full of strangeness inspired by his migraine experiences. One thing is for sure, a migraine is a neurologic event that affects the entire system and the entire system suffers even when the pain (if there was pain) is gone. Recently, Dr. Blaloh, one of the oldest and well-known researches of migraine and migraine-associated vertigo has found that migraine is a problem with the patient’s DNA.

All of this research, all of this knowledge, and, as of 2003, 303 million people still suffer with migraine worldwide. Most people who treat their migraines use migraine preventatives, which are not developed to treat migraine. They are medications which, when given to patients who happen to be migraineurs, their migraines went away. These medications then have added “migraine” to their list of secondary uses. The most effective of these are SSRPs and anticonvulsants. These medications also have serious side-effects, some requiring yearly blood tests, and have difficult withdrawal symptoms.

Others who suffer use alternative methods, but these people are in the minority.

There is, however, a plastic surgeon in San Francisco, Ziv M. Peled, M.D., who has had great results following peripheral nerve surgery for migraine. To understand why, we have to open ourselves to yet another cause of migraine, such as peripheral nerve irritation (peripheral meaning outside of the brain and spinal cord). Dr. Peled first tests patients to look for a pinched nerve in their head or neck. If he finds a culprit, he then injects the area with botox to see if there is a positive response. Only if he gets a positive response will he go ahead with surgery which entails decompressing the pinched nerve. He claims a 90% success rate and on-line testimonials claim that the surgery is painless with immediate results (disappearance of symptoms) and no recovery period.

For people whose lives are robbed by migraine and/or migraine-associated vertigo, a pinched nerve in the head or neck might be a blessing, because there is an easy fix. No more toxic medications and special diets. No more money spent on alternative treatments. Best of all, no more days of agony, in bed with the curtains drawn. Not to mention the following day spent in that migraine “hangover.” And those who suffer the horrific illness of migraine-associated veritgo, I need not even mention the relief. If this condition were due to a pinched nerve and were to resolve from a safe, simple surgery, forever, I, myself, would be dancing on the roof top until the dawn!

Sleep Deprivation effects our entire physiology, especially our brains. In the most comprehensive study I could glean, findings showed that glucose tolerance was lower in the sleep-debt condition than in the fully rested condition, as were thyrotropin concentrations. Evening cortisol concentrations were raised and activity of the sympathetic nervous system (flight/fright response (mine)) was increased in the sleep-dept condition. The interpretation of this study is that sleep debt has a harmful impact on carbohydrate metabolism and endocrine function. The effects are similar to those seen in normal aging and, therefore, sleep debt may increase the severity of age-related chronic disorders. Decrements in cognitive performance were reported in other studies.

The brain runs on glucose, not fat, not protein. If glucose levels are off, the brain suffers.  People who suffer with migraine and migraine-associated vertigo need sleep!  As well, those who are in the 24/7 migraine state of migraine-associated vertigo are chronically fatigued, making sleep especially important.

More interesting facts about sleep deprivation in our society:

The captain of an Air India Express Plane carrying 166 Passengers woke up from a nap and took over the controls. As his Boeing 737, carrying 166 passengers, approached Mangalore, his co-pilot warned him that he was coming in at the wrong angle and repeatedly shouted at him that he should try over.  Listening to the cockpit recorder, the last sound heard was the co-pilot screaming that they didn’t have any runway left. Only eight people survived, as the plane burst into flames, having overshot the landing.  The official investigation found that the captain was suffering “sleep inertia.”  There have been other near-misses as well as a case of the bizarre ranting of one psychotic pilot which may have been caused by sleep deprivation.

Let’s come out of the sky and talk about automobiles.  Some 20% of auto accidents have been due to drowsy drivers according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  As well, U.S. military researchers admit that sleep deprivation is one of the leading causes of friendly fire.

What is the reason for this phenomenon in our society?  Because our circadian rhythms are out of balance.

There are many circadian rhythms.  For humans, and for sleep, there are three classic body markers, melatonin secreted by the pineal gland, core body temperature, and cortisol level.

When morning comes we open our eyes and light hits the retina, sending a signal to the pineal gland, causing melatonin to be secreted.  The level of melatonin peaks during the night and is absent during the day. Melatonin starts to show up in our bodies in dim light, at dusk, and has a soporific effect.  Core body temperature and cortisol level come down with rest and relaxation.

Since the invention of electricity, more people are out after dark, keeping their body temperatures and cortisol levels high longer than their natural rhythms would.  If we are home, many of us are either in front of a TV, reading with lights on, or in front of a computer, right up until bedtime.  And then we cannot fall asleep.

In essence, we have forgotten how to fall to sleep.

According to the CDC, in 1990 24% of US workers were getting less than six hours of sleep a night.  By 2010 30% of workers were getting less than six hours of sleep at night.

According to Marketdata Enterprises,  Americans are spending 60 billions of dollars on prescriptions, at sleep labs on mattresses and for medical devices. There are even, for people who can afford it, “sleep coaches.”

Our ancestors had two “sleeps,” one after the sun went down until after midnight and a second sleep which would last the rest of the night.  In between these two sleeps they would be awake for an hour or so.  This hour or so was a very product time.  It was a time for praying, reading, writing, art, artisen work, contemplation of dreams and having sex.  Indigenous cultures today are also said to sleep this way and we know that the indigenous elders grow very old and very healthy.

In summary, technology has brought us great things and opened our lives to great possibilities. However, we have paid many prices, one of them is a good night’s sleep, another is our health, for us, migraine and/or migraine-associated vertigo.  We cannot think straight, we are fatigued, our moods are not stable, our relationships are not stable, we are not productive and our bodies are aging faster.  Yet, looking at the number of new prescriptions for sleeping aids written each year, new high-tech mattresses, new sleep devices on the market, the mass solution seems to be for more technology.  In other words, we keep fighting our body’s natural circadian rhythm with more of what has put us out of balance.

What sleep specialists suggest is this and this is especially important for those who suffer with migraine and/or migraine-associated vertigo.  Do not exercise up to three hours before bedtime. (This allows your body’s core temperature and cortisol levels to come down.) Do not nap during the day. (This will throw off your circadian rhythm.) Have a warm bath before bedrime. (This will help you relax and also bring your core body temperature down.) Establish a bedtime routine. (This will help relax your mind and body, teaching your mind and body that it is bedtime.)  Go to bed and wake up at the same time every morning, with some leeway for seasonal changes. (This will also train your mind, until your circadian rhythm comes into balance and takes over.)  A low level light is ideal just before sleep, followed by a total blackout during sleep.  Specialists suggest covering a digital clock at night for total blackout.  Use your bed for two things only – sleep and sex. (no reading in bed, no laptop in bed. This will train your mind that when you get into bed, you are going to go to sleep.)

There are other things you can try, CDs which put your brain into theta waves. There are also websites where you can download free hypnosis sleep aids.

Eventually, you will find yourself in a normal circadian rhythm, falling to sleep like a baby, back to nature, not dependent on technology, and feeling well rested each morning.  And hopefully, your migraine and/or migraine-associated vertigo symptoms will have eased.

Celebrities and historical figures with Migraine disease include, among many: van gogh

President, and architect of the Declaration of Independence Thomas Jefferson; the great painters Vincent Van Gogh, George Seurat (after which is named the Seurat effect, a current medical term often used to describe the visual phenomena of scintillating aura aka scotoma), and Claude Monet; great authors Virginia Woolfe, Cervantes (best known as the author of the classic, ‘Don Quixote’), and Lewis Carroll who’s Migraines are said to have influenced his gifts of literature still so popular today; leaders such as Julius Caesar, Napoleon, Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, and Mary Todd Lincoln; scholars such as psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, and Friedrich Nietzsche, the great German philosopher and poet who kept his enemy Migraine closer; and Icon Elvis Presley, the King of Rock & Roll who struggled with the king of all ‘headaches.

The most famous performing artist to suffer with migraine-associated vertigo is surely Janet Jackson, who, in October 2008 had to cancel some of her tour dates in order to gain control of her illness…followed by Elvis.

Ohter performing artists who suffer from Migraine include Academy Award winning actress Elizabeth Taylor, actor James Cromwell who received a best actor nomination for his portrayal of Farmer Hoggett in Babe, movie star and Friends actress Lisa Kudrow sometimes suffers from attacks, supermodel and Friends actress Elle Macpherson, actress Lee Grant, Grammy award winning singer and songwriter Carly Simon, her number one single “Your So Vain” as popular now as it was in the 70′s, country singing giant Loretta Lynn, Susan Olsen of Brady Bunch fame, Star Jones of The View daily TV show, Fred Norris of the ever popular nationally syndicated Radio & TV Howard Stern Show, and endearing & powerful Academy Award winning actress Whoopi Goldberg. It is important to note that for Migraine sufferers who have certain professions, such as the performing arts, which puts them in the public eye, it becomes difficult for them to admit that they have Migraine. With hundreds of thousands of dollars, or even millions of dollars riding on a performer being on a set on time, the stigma of such an episodic disease can interfere with getting the best job opportunities offered to them. We applaud those with the openness and candor to have spoken publicly about their struggle with Migraine as it helps others who look up to them as role models.

Currently, some notable public figures suffering with Migraine disease are: Princess Margaret, Jennifer Ringley, the Annie Glenn (wife of astronaut & Senator John Glenn who stood up to Vice President Johnson when she refused to let Johnson and reporters into her home after a launch attempt was scrubbed–a woman made of the right stuff, we might add). Other notable Migraine sufferers include sports basketball greats Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Scotty Pipen.

Top athletes cannot hide their disease as skillfully as many actors can, as we saw when MVP Denver Broncos running back Terrell Davis almost was knocked out of the Superbowl XXXII due to an ill-timed Migraine-Associated Vertigo attack. Other gifted major athletes who currently fight one of their toughest adversaries (Migraine) include Cleveland Browns Strong safety Marquez Pope, LSU’s top quaterback Rohan Davey, and Arizona top runningback J.R. Redmond. Baseball’s David Bell of the Seattle Mariners, Dwight Gooden pitcher for the Cleveland Indians, Minnesota Twins Pitcher Eric Milton, Jose Canseco of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, and Sacramento Kings Jason Williams have been struck out by severe head-pain and the deep bench of ancillary symptoms from nausea to visual disturbances. Top woman golf pro Se Ri Pak, as well as LPGA leader Kathryn Marshall and golfer Fred Couples have to overcome the unpredictable Migraine hazard. Basketball’s Sacramento Kings flashy Jason Williams and collage basketball player Jordan Adams who starts for Kentucky, both have had debilitating Migraine take them from key games.

Nationally ranked living visual artists who suffer from Migraine include our own Michael John Coleman, as well as New York painter Janet McKenzie whose work you will find thoughout the site. Other well known contemporary artists include California painter and sculpture Trevor Southy, painter Dennis Frings, and BJ Anderson who suffers from Migraine-like headaches (she is known around the world for her popular renderings of Cape Cod.)

And finally, some of the most notable migraineurs of all are mothers, many of whom around the world are challenged by mgraine and migraine-associated vertigo. Despite their disease, they go on to raise families, manage households and/or careers, and contribute to communities. Many fathers, too, are migraineurs and sufferers of migraine-associated vertigo, who continue to care for family and loved ones, carry out careers, build homes, and participate in their communities. To continually fight a debilitating disease while continuing to contribute to others makes them unsung heroes deserving of celebratory status in society as a whole, even though they are not household names. Well, they are ,of course, household names, (as “Mom” and “Dad” are household names). Most heart-breaking is when I hear from young people, very young people, who will be living with this dreaded illness their entire lives. My heart aches for them.

Because, no, this illness does not go away, once a migraineur, always a migraineur. And migraine-associated vertigo, without treatment, always gets worse, believe me.

So…for those who read this and recognize their family member as a migraine sufferer or a sufferer of migraine-associated vertigo, give them the love and respect they need and deserve.

Below is a great YouTube video by a man who suffers episodic migraine-associated vertigo attacks. My illness was ongoing, everyday was the same. Everybody is different, but this man is making a point, a point which was impossible for me when I was bedridden, but a point which is important for anyone who can do it.  So please take the time and go to this link:

Drink Water

TOP 10 REASONS WE NEED TO DRINK WATER – This is especially important for those with migraine and/or migraine-associated vertigo.

1) Water is the substance of life. Life can not exist without water. We must constantly be adding fresh water to our body in order to keep it properly hydrated. We can only survive 3 – 4 days without water.

2) The body is comprised of 70 – 75% water and this ratio must be maintained for good health. This is the most important element we put into our body. Dehydration can occur at any time of the year, not only during the summer months when it is hot. The dryness that occurs during winter can dehydrate the body even quicker than when it’s hot. Many victims of diseases such as cholera die primarily through dehydration, not from the disease itself.

3) It is difficult for the body to get water from any other source than water itself. Soft drinks and alcohol steal tremendous amounts of water from the body to properly digest the high levels of sugar. Even other beverages such as coffee, milk and juice act similarly.

4) Water plays a vital role in nearly every bodily function. Since the blood is 90% water and the brain consists of about 96% water, you should drink only the best quality water.

5) Water is essential for proper digestion, nutrient absorption and chemical reactions. “Wetter Water,” of hexagonal molecular structure created by the electrolysis process, can permeate the cellular membranes easier, resulting in increased benefits from food or medication.

6) Water is essential for proper circulation in the body and vital to every cell.

7) Water helps remove toxins from the body, in particular from the digestive tract. Acidosis is the body’s worst enemy. Ionized water can help reverse this condition.

8) Water regulates the body’s cooling system, so be sure to drink 8 – 10 glasses per day.

9) Consistent failure to drink enough water can lead to chronic cellular dehydration. This is a condition where the body’s cells are never quite hydrated enough leaving them in a weakened immune state and vulnerable to attack from disease. It weakens the body’s overall immune system and leads to chemical, nutritional an pH imbalances that can cause a host of diseases.

10) Good Alkaline Water, with a pH of 7.5 – 8, helps to balance the acidity created in the body from food digestion, exercise or even stress. Diseases flourish in an acidic environment.

OFFICIAL RECOMMENDATION: You should drink half your body weight in ounces of water every day to provide you MINIMUM water replacement requirements, e.g. 160 lbs. = 80 oz. Water.

I find that recommendation, which was put out by some organization, like Weight-Watchers, is way to much.  I would be wetting my bed every night.  But, its true that you cannot tell by “feel” when you’re dehydrated.

See previous post about the Health of Your Tongue.  Check your tongue.

Below are the signs and symptoms of dehydration according to the Mayo Clinic.  I personally find that I get nauseous and fatigued, as a first sign.  If you suffer with migraine and/or migraine-associated vertigo, you will see that headache is among the first symptoms of dehydration.

Mild to moderate dehydration is likely to cause:

  • Dry, sticky mouth
  • Sleepiness or tiredness — children are likely to be less active than usual
  • Thirst
  • Decreased urine output — no wet diapers for three hours for infants and eight hours or more without urination for older children and teens
  • Few or no tears when crying
  • Dry skin
  • Headache
  • Constipation
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

Severe dehydration, a medical emergency, can cause:

  • Extreme thirst
  • Extreme fussiness or sleepiness in infants and children; irritability and confusion in adults
  • Very dry mouth, skin and mucous membranes
  • Lack of sweating
  • Little or no urination — any urine that is produced will be dark yellow or amber
  • Sunken eyes
  • Shriveled and dry skin that lacks elasticity and doesn’t “bounce back” when pinched into a fold
  • In infants, sunken fontanels — the soft spots on the top of a baby’s head
  • Low blood pressure
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Rapid breathing
  • No tears when crying
  • Fever
  • In the most serious cases, delirium or unconsciousness

Unfortunately, thirst isn’t always a reliable gauge of the body’s need for water, especially in children and older adults. A better indicator is the color of your urine: Clear or light-colored urine means you’re well hydrated, whereas a dark yellow or amber color usually signals dehydration.

When to see a doctor If you’re a healthy adult, you can usually treat mild to moderate dehydration by drinking more fluids, such as water or a sports drink (Gatorade, Powerade, others).

Get immediate medical care if you develop severe signs and symptoms such as extreme thirst, a lack of urination, shriveled skin, dizziness and confusion.

Treat children and older adults with greater caution. Call your family doctor right away if your loved one:

  • Develops severe diarrhea, with or without vomiting or fever
  • Has bloody stool
  • Has had moderate diarrhea for three days or more
  • Can’t keep down fluids
  • Is irritable or disoriented and much sleepier or less active than usual
  • Has any of the signs or symptoms of mild or moderate dehydration

Go to the nearest hospital emergency room or call 911 or your emergency medical number if you think a child or older adult is severely dehydrated. You can help prevent dehydration from becoming severe by carefully monitoring someone who is sick and giving fluids, such as an oral rehydration solution (Pedialyte, others) at the first sign of diarrhea, vomiting or fever and by encouraging children to drink plenty of water before, during and after exercise.

More on water in an upcoming post. Please keep yourself hydrated in order to keep your migraine and/or migraine-associated vertigo under control!

According to Fox News: savannah guthrie

Has the pressure of the ratings war after the bloody firing of Ann Curry  become too much? “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie is battling painful migraines while settling into her new spot on the couch for the NBC morning  program.

Guthrie, who earlier this month replaced Curry, has been suffering from migraines so severe, she needs to see a doctor several times a week and wear dark glasses to alleviate pressure on her eyes.

“She goes to a doctor two days a week for treatment of the migraines, and is required to wear dark glasses when she’s not on set,” a source told Page Six, adding, “The pressure of taking over after Ann’s execution is taking its toll.”

Guthrie’s heath issue comes as she and the rest of the “Today” team are in a  heated battle for morning show domination with ABC’s “Good Morning America.” Early ratings showed that “GMA” topped “Today” by more than 300,000 viewers  during Guthrie’s first week as co-host.

Plucky Guthrie, 40, was named Matt Lauer’s new co-host after Curry, 55, was  unceremoniously booted from the co-anchor seat after just a year on the job.

Sources tell us Guthrie’s issues have not been noticeable to others on set,  and some told us they’d never seen Guthrie wearing dark glasses while at the 30 Rock studio.

She hasn’t missed any work because of the headaches, nor is she expected to  miss “Today” coverage of the London Olympic games that kick off next week, sources told us.

“Savannah does have migraines,” another source told us. “She’s had them for  years. They are not triggered by anything particular. If she is indeed getting  them, she’s completely capable of working through them.

“You would never been able to know anything was wrong by watching her at  work,” the source added.

Well, that’s what Fox News says. Migraines and/or migraine-associated vertigo are typically triggered by something and a typical trigger is stress.

Okay, you can’t believe anything you read or hear on the news can you?

Savannah Guthrie and her doctor should read this blog – she would certainly find relief.  And I hope, whether reading this blog or not, that she does. Nobody should suffer from this illness, that’s why I take the time I do blogging to you.

As always,

When I decided to blog about the health of your tongue, the first image that came to my mind was the most famous Health of Tonguetongue in history. I wish this picture had been taken in color.  We might have been able to tell use Einstein’s tongue as an example for some of the possible problems listed below!

The appearance of your tongue can reveal a lot about your health. This, is turn can guide you regarding some lifestyle and/or diet changes you can make to help with your migraine or migraine-associated vertigo. So, think of the look and feel of the tongue as a tool for you to use.

The colour, texture, and moisture of the tongue can indicate anaemia, dehydration and kidney problems, to name just a few.

How should a healthy tongue look? A healthy tongue should be pink in colour, slightly moist, and smooth with no bumps or spots. The tongue should also be layered with visible taste buds that detect the five taste sensations – sweet, bitter, salty, sour, and savoury.

The appearance of the tongue:

Colour: A healthy tongue should be pink in colour. The colour of the tongue also reflects the health of the body’s internal organs and blood circulation.

    • Pale – could indicate your blood is lacking haemoglobin, especially if the tongue is also extremely smooth. You may also feel tired and lethargic. Ensure you eat iron rich foods.
    • Red – bright red suggests that the tongue is inflamed. This is often due to nutritional deficiencies in iron and B-vitamins. It can also indicate excess heat both in the tongue and in certain organs.
    • Purple – can indicate high cholesterol levels and poor circulation that results in stagnant blood in the tongue. This is often the result of lifestyle, diet, and medications. Ginger and garlic can be beneficial.

Texture: A healthy tongue should be smooth in appearance, gently moist, with visible taste buds.

    • Raised red spots – these spots are the result of broken veins and capillaries in the tongue. Try taking bioflavonoids, which can be found in vitamin C. These help to strengthen capillaries.
    • Ulcers – ulcers are not uncommon and can also appear on the gums and lips. However, if they persist after 10 days consult a doctor. Ulcers are often the result of fatigue and stress.
    • Swollen / puffy – can be the result of allergies, medications or infections. Can affect the visible area, but also at the back of the tongue, mouth or gums. Can be due to a vitamin B12 deficiency.

Coating: A healthy tongue should have a thin transparent coating. Changes to the coating can indicate acute illness, such as colds and digestive issues.

    • Yellow – a yellow coating on the tongue is often the result of a bacterial or fungal infection.
    • Furry / thick – a thick coating can represent an infection on the tongue, oral thrush or dehydration. This can impair taste and cause bad breath.
    • No coating – if no coating is present on the tongue there may be inefficiencies in the digestive system.

Chinese Medicine and the tongue

The connection between the appearance of the tongue and general health has been studied for thousands of years in Chinese medicine. Chinese medicine practitioners believe each area of the tongue is connected to specific internal organs:

  • The sides of the tongue reflect the health of the liver
  • The tip of the tongue reflects the health of the heart
  • The center of the tongue reflects the health of the spleen
  • The back of the tongue reflects the health of the kidneys

When examining the tongue see if any of the symptoms mentioned in the previous section affect one area more than others. However, it is important to remember that this is not a definite diagnostic tool. If problems persist you should always consult a doctor.  When examining your tongue in the mirror; do so under natural light, and do not extend your tongue for more than 15 seconds. After this time period tension in the tongue can cause the shape and colour to change.

Nutrients that promote good oral health

Nutritional deficiencies can affect the health and appearance of the tongue. The most common deficiencies which do so are B-vitamins (in particular B6 and B12).

  • B-vitamins – each individual B-vitamin has its own specific role to keep the body healthy. Deficiencies in B6 or B12 can lead to a swollen and sore tongue, along with teeth indentations and fissures on the surface of the tongue.
  • Iron – an iron deficiency can cause swelling of the tongue and painful sores in the mouth. The tongue will also appear pale and smooth due to the lack of haemoglobin in the blood.
  • Vitamin C – keeps capillaries and mouth tissue strong. Bleeding gums are often the result of a lack of vitamin C. Also helps the body fight off infections and bacteria’s such as the Candida bacteria that causes tongue thrush.
  • Calcium – the jaw and teeth have a high calcium content, and so a deficiency in calcium can reduce resistance to infections and tooth decay. Vitamin D can also have a positive impact on oral health.

Poor oral hygiene can result in the spread of harmful bacteria around the mouth, infections, and bad breath. In order to keep your tongue clean brush and floss teeth twice daily and don’t forget to brush your tongue too!

Take care of your body, and your tongue will be healthy.  And don’t forget to take care of your tongue!

Americans eat way too much fat, way too much sugar, and way too much protein. In fact, Americans simply eat too much of everything. The way out of this dilemma is so easy that we usually miss it: consider occasionally fasting.

We could spend all day talking about the value of fasting, but only you can find out for yourself what it can do for you. Experience is your best teacher, and improved health is always the best proof. A fast will cost very little money, and may well be one of the best things you’ve ever done for yourself.

Fasting should be with your doctor’s approval, and is not for growing children, and clearly not for anyone pregnant or nursing. People who are taking certain medications and people who have other compelling medical reasons should not fast. This still leaves the majority of us.

The following is a safe, comfortable fast according to Andrew Saul, author of “Fire Your Doctor, How to be Independently Healthy”

A “cycle” is made up of an eight day juice fast, three days to come off the fast, and then ten days on a three-quarters raw food diet.  (8 + 3 + 10 = 21 days.)  This really works.

FASTING First, fast.  Eight days may seem like a very long time to go without food. Actually, for the first day or two of a fast, your body uses up the food remaining in your digestive tract from previous meals. For the next couple of days, your body uses stored food reserves from your liver. This means that a fast doesn’t really begin until about the fifth day. Now an eight day fast is closer to a three day fast, and attainable by nearly everyone.  (According to A. Saul: “Diabetics and persons on medication requiring meals should check with their physician, of course. Fasting is not for children, pregnant women or nursing women. If there is a medical reason why you should not fast, then don’t. Check with your doctor first.”)

Since “fasting” conjures up visions of starvation, it is important to realize that we are talking about JUICE fasting here. Freshly made vegetable juices, taken in quantity, are not a beverage. They are a raw, highly digestible food.  It is ideal to have all the juice you want, without forcing yourself to drink it. The rules: “When you are hungry, drink juice.  When you are thirsty, drink juice also.”

JUICING It is generally a good idea to dilute your juice 50/50 with water. If you can afford filtered water, use it. If not, don’t worry… the goodness of the juices will carry you. Some people, including me, do not like the taste of diluted juice.  An alternative is to drink a glass of water, then drink a glass of juice. This gives the same effect, and tastes better. Be sure to drink the water first, for after the juice you may not want the water as much.

When we say “juice”, we generally are referring to vegetable juice, freshly prepared. Fruit juice tends to be too sweet for comfortable fasting.  However, there is nothing to stop you from experimenting and coming up with your own best regimen. As long as you get good results, HOW you get them is secondary.

You cannot buy freshly prepared vegetable juice in any store at any price… unless they literally juice the vegetables right in front of your eyes and you drink it down before they make you pay for it! Any juice in a carton, can or bottle has been heat treated and was certainly packaged at least a few hours ago. Even frozen juice is not fresh, then, is it? This means that you will need one essential and somewhat expensive appliance:  your own juicer.

JUICERS A juicer is not a blender.  A juicer makes juice; a blender makes raw baby food. There is nothing wrong with blending your foods. If you found such food to your liking, it would actually be very digestible. However, to make juice you need to extract the fluid part of the vegetable along with the vitamins, minerals and enzymes it contains. Therefore, you need a juice extractor. We are also not referring to a whirl-top orange juicer, either.

Be sure to get a really good juicer. Good juicers make tastier juices, faster. Good juicers also clean up more quickly than cheap juicers. I personally like the “Breville” brand juicer. It’s super easy to use and, especially important, to clean. And it will last you years.  All parts are dishwasher safe.

WHAT TO JUICE You can juice almost anything you can eat raw. Anything that’s on the Migraine Diet.  Vegetables are best, especially carrots, cucumbers, beets, zucchini squash, romaine lettuce, sprouts, celery. You may juice fruits also, naturally. Freshly made raw apple is great added to any juice. It is not generally a good idea to juice potatoes.

It is wise to peel vegetables that have been sprayed or waxed, such as cucumbers. Sprayed fruits are also good to peel before juicing. Carrots and other underground vegetables often do not need peeling.  Instead, give them a good scrubbing with a nylon-bristle vegetable brush while rinsing under tap water. Beets are the exception. Since beet skins are very bitter, it is wise to peel beets before juicing. A hint to save time: dip the beets for about 20 seconds in boiling water and then peel them… it’s much easier.

Your juice will taste the best if you drink it right after preparing it. I mean within moments! Fresh juice contains a great amount of raw food enzymes and vitamins, many of which are easily lost as the juice sits. So don’t let it sit! Drink it right down, with the thought that this is unbelievably good for you.

HOW MUCH JUICE TO DRINK Drink as much juice as you wish.  Remember that it is a food, not a beverage and that you can have as much as you want. There is little fear of over doing it.  It is, after all, hard to hurt yourself with vegetables!

A good rule of thumb is to drink three or four eight-ounce glasses of fresh juice a day (for an adult). The best time is right before a meal, or between meals.  Absorption of and benefit from the juice is highest then.

You will probably find that you will be urinating more as you drink more juices. That figures, doesn’t it?  You are taking in more liquid. You may also notice that you have more bowel movements now than you were previously accustomed to. This, too, is to be expected. Your body may well respond to all this nourishment by “cleaning house” a bit. More excretory symptoms would be the result. Ever notice how many trash cans you fill when you clean out the attic, basement or garage? Why, you hardly noticed all the rubbish you had stored in there until you went to clean it out.  The same is true, by analogy, with your body.

WHAT JUICES ARE BEST FOR YOU You may drink those juices that appeal to you the most.  To find out your favorites, try each of them!

CARROT juice is tasty and popular, and two glasses of carrot juice per day are highly beneficial. There is no need to peel your carrots if you first scrub them well with a tough brush. I recommend a vegetable brush with nylon bristles for this purpose.  Brush the daylights out of the carrots while rinsing them under water. This is quicker than peeling, and is less wasteful.

Carrot juice is very high in vitamin A. The vitamin A in carrots is actually “provitamin A” or carotene. Carotene is completely non-toxic, no matter how much you consume. The worst thing that can happen if you drink a huge amount of carrot juice is that you will turn orange.

No, really. You see, beta carotene is a natural pigment, a natural coloring. Excess carotene is stored in your skin until your body wants it and then turns it into active vitamin A as needed. An abundance of carotene in your skin makes you look orange. This condition is called “carotenosis” and is harmless. Okay, it looks odd to visit the folks (or the doctor) when you are orange. I know: when my son was little, he LOVED sweet potatoes, carrots and butternut squash to the point of orange skin. The relatives got a bit worried, but the coloration disappeared after we limited his orange veggies for a week or two. So, to get rid of the color, simply back off the carrot juice (and other orange vegetables) for a while and it will go away.  If someone thinks you are not well, tell them what you are doing. A doctor who thinks you have jaundice could then understand right away that you don’t.  Liver function tests would also confirm your good health.

Some folks have tried canned or bottled carrot juice and they didn’t like it. No wonder! Fresh juice tastes SO much better that there isn’t really any comparison.  I have two teenagers who WILL drink freshly-made carrot juice. Could there possibly be any higher recommendation than that?

CELERY juice is very tasty, but a bit high in sodium. Use small amounts of this juice to flavor the others. Juice celery leaves and all for the most benefit.

CUCUMBER juice is remarkably tasty.  It tastes rather different than a cucumber itself. Perhaps you will find that the taste reminds you of watermelon. Peel cucumbers before juicing to avoid the waxes applied to their skins to enhance their shelf life in supermarkets.

ROMAINE LETTUCE or BEAN SPROUTS will make an especially nutritious juice with a taste that is well worth acquiring. This “green drink” is loaded with minerals and chlorophyll.

ZUCCHINI SQUASH juiced up tastes better than you’d ever imagine. Peel first, and enjoy. You may well be the first on your block to be a zucchini-juice fan. It also keeps the juicer from clogging on higher-fiber vegetables.

BEET juice is, traditionally, a blood-builder.  In days past, herbalists looked at the blood-red beet as a tonic more so because it worked, rather than any color similarity. Beets must be peeled before juicing. Beet skins are very bitter. The beets, on the other hand, are quite sweet and make great juice. They will also permanently stain your juicer, so don’t try to remove that color by washing. More important, beet juice will color your bowel movements.

That lovely red color of fresh beets can cause genuine alarm when it is seen in the toilet water. I know someone who had forgotten that he’d had beet juice the day before. He could only figure that he had a terrible case of hemorrhoids when he looked into the toilet and saw that red, red water.  It was the beets, of course. When you have beet juice, remember not to be alarmed. Beet juice is widely used in the food industry as a natural coloring agent.  You can (literally) see why!

A hint: you will save time if you first carefully dip beets in boiling water before peeling them.

CABBAGE juice was used by Garnett Cheney, M.D. to cure bleeding peptic ulcers back in the 1950′s. (Cheney, G. (1952) “Vitamin U therapy of peptic ulcer.” California Medicine, 77:4, 248-252) Dr. Cheney’s patients drank a quart of cabbage juice a day and were cured in less than half the usual time… with no drugs whatsoever. Since then, cabbage juice has successfully been used for a variety of gastrointestinal illnesses. Colitis, spastic colon, indigestion, chronic constipation, certain forms of rectal bleeding and other conditions seem to respond well to the nutrients in cabbage juice.  Dr. Cheney called its healing factor “Vitamin U” (for unknown). More recently, the American Cancer Society has urged people to eat more of the cabbage/broccoli family of vegetables because of their protective effects against cancer. There may be something to this cabbage juice idea.  It certainly couldn’t hurt to try it.

Coming off the juice “fast” is best done by eating lightly for a while. Fruit, fruit salads, vegetable soups, cottage cheese and other light foods are appropriate at this point.  A good rule of thumb here is to eat only half as much as you want to at any one time… but eat twice as often.  This is for about three days.

For the ten day 75% raw food diet, you can eat all you want as long as three-quarters of it is uncooked. For the uncooked part of the diet, eat fresh, raw vegetables and fruits. Begin each meal with a large salad, perhaps a fruit salad for breakfast.  Then, when you’ve finished the salad, have whatever you want within reason. The 25% cooked portion could include brown rice, cooked vegetables including potatoes, sweet potatoes, yams, squash and other foods that you like.  Meat is not recommended, nor is chicken or turkey.

One of the best sources of flesh protein is seafood. Fish is a major source of important oils and other nutrients in addition to protein.  Shrimp and shellfish are good foods. Generally, it is wise to avoid eating a catch from questionably polluted waters, such as the Great Lakes. This is one statement that I look forward to striking from this writing when our fresh waters are cleaner.

If you don’t want to eat seafood, you do not have to. Eggs in moderation, raw cow’s milk, miso, bean sprouts are all good protein sources. The issue is not WHERE you get your protein but ARE YOU getting your protein.  If you are not yet a vegetarian, now is the time to move in that direction. If you currently don’t eat meat, good for you… and remember: get plenty of protein.

When you go out to eat, it’s easy to stay right on this program by eating at salad bars. Remember, try to make the other three-quarters of your diet fresh and raw.

All the strongest and longest-lived animals on earth are vegetarians, or close to it.

Give it a try – I know I am !
